Morse code numbers

The digits 0–9 in International Morse code, written as dots (·) and dashes (−). Every number is exactly five elements long, which follows one neat pattern. Use the translator below the chart to hear any number or decode your own.

The five-element pattern

Unlike letters, which vary from one to five elements, every Morse code number is exactly five elements long. That fixed length is a strong clue when you are decoding: a run of five dots and dashes with no gap is almost always a digit.

The pattern is symmetrical and easy to hold in your head:

  • 1–5 lead with dots. 1 is one dot then four dashes (·−−−−); each step adds a dot and drops a dash, until 5 is all dots (·····).
  • 6–0 lead with dashes. 6 is one dash then four dots (−····); each step adds a dash, until 0 is all dashes (−−−−−).

So to work out any digit you only have to count the leading marks. Three dots at the front? That is 3 (···−−). Two dashes at the front? That is 7 (−−···). The rest always fills to five.

Where number Morse shows up

Digits in Morse turn up in call signs, grid references and coordinates, dates hidden in puzzles, and lock combinations in escape rooms. Because the timing rules are identical to letters — a dot is one unit, a dash is three, with the same 1-3-7 spacing — the same tools read both. How are numbers written in Morse code?

Every digit 0–9 is exactly five elements long. 1 to 5 start with that many dots and fill the rest with dashes (1 is ·−−−−, 5 is ·····); 6 to 0 start with dashes and fill the rest with dots (6 is −····, 0 is −−−−−). That fixed five-element length is what tells a decoder a number from a letter.

What is the easiest way to remember Morse numbers?

Count the leading dots. 1 has one dot then dashes, 2 has two, up to 5 which is all dots. Then it mirrors: 6 has one dash then dots, 7 has two, up to 0 which is all dashes. So the marks always add up to five.

Are there shorter “cut numbers” in Morse?

Yes — ham radio operators sometimes use abbreviated “cut numbers” (for example T for 0 and N for 9) to save time, but the standard International Morse numbers below are the ones to learn first and the ones this translator uses.

How do I decode numbers from a picture or audio?
